“…and do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.”
— Ephesians 4:30
Sometimes there are seasons in our walk with God when we want to simply throw in the towel in defeat. We get caught up in trying to please God in our own strength and it never works in our favor. God then reminds us of the power and present help of the Holy Spirit, who is not only WITH US, but also living IN US. On Sunday, we learned that if we are going to live a life, rid of selfishness, we must rely on the Holy Spirit’s power to transform us. The Holy Spirit desires to work in every area of our lives. First, the Holy Spirit desires to work IN US. When I received Jesus into my life for the first time in 1999, I thought I was just receiving Jesus as Savior, but I didn’t realize I was also receiving the power of the Holy Spirit, so I could SERVE HIM AS LORD.
Secondly, the Holy Spirit also desires to work THROUGH US. I quickly realized the way you overcome selfishness is by the Holy Spirit working through you. He works in us, to work through us. The Holy Spirit’s desire is to bring us to a place in our lives where we learn to yield to Him and His leading. The Scripture encourages us in Ephesians 4:30 that we are not to “grieve the Holy Spirit.” The Holy Spirit helps us to bear and produce good fruit in our lives, so we can please God. But when we are full of ourselves which bears and produces bad fruit in our lives, we bring sorrow to God. May we live full of the Holy Spirit, lives that desire to please God in every way. This week I challenge you to spend time with God and allow His Spirit to speak to you and to work through you.
As you allow the Spirit of God to draw you close to Him I encourage you to be sensitive to His voice. Ask God to show you areas of your life that “grieve the Holy Spirit.” I am praying that the Holy Spirit would give you the power to live victoriously; for God is able to keep you until the day of redemption.
